Decision Making and Hierarchy of Needs in a Non Profit Center
Wednesday 11 July, 10am PST
Before joining Esalen in October of 2016 Terence had a 25 year career as a leader and Senior Executive for large for-profit and non-profit organizations, focused on execution and mission alignment.
Overview
The african proverb goes something like this. “If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go with your tribe”.
In this age of silicon valley startups, “fail fast”, “quick wins” and “Tiger Teams” many leaders find it easier to make progress by shrinking decision making teams and focusing more on the outcomes than transparency and inclusion in the process of decision making.
Where the relationships in the organizations are transactional (think a production line in a factory) this is a viable approach but in organizations where the Mission is the main focus (think Non-Profit) and where much of the team is made up of volunteers, getting mission motivated staff and teams engaged and aligned is a critical success factor. We need to go with our tribe.
Using some basic decision making models and leveraging Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs to understand how people engage in an organization we can create a much more sustainable and effective environment for non-profits and communities.
We share a few questions for you contemplate in advance
- What is the culture of decision making within your organisation?
- How important to you is transparency and inclusion in the decision making process?
- What difference would it make to your centers’ contribution in the world, if staff engagement and motivation were at their peak?
