Our monthly webinar series is the second Wednesday of the month and we invite you to join us. The link will be shared with all HCN members for you to engage in the learning community.
Join Susie Arnett, the Director of Luminary Programming at Kripalu, as she guides the conversation:
Programming in a Changing World: Mission v. Margin
Wednesday 8 August, 10am PST
Prior to working at Kripalu, Susie was a senior programmer at the Omega Institute and before that, she spent 15 years in the television industry in the documentary and news areas.
There is an old joke in the TV business: we want a brand new idea that’s stood the test of time. Often, when programming retreat centers, we find ourselves in a similar position. We want to find programming ideas that break new ground but we also want them to have a track record.
On this call, we’ll talk about this conundrum as well as the age old questions of what do people want, where to find the next generation of speakers, diversifying one’s offerings with speakers of color, do you program topics or presenters, trendsetting and curating v. filling the holes, mission v. margin in the vetting process and “Taste clusters” and capturing data to better serve your audience.
A core issue is mission v. margin. I would imagine for many of us, mission is easy to talk about since we work for retreat centers because we’re passionate about the mission and transformation. Susie’s idea is to focus more on the margin/business of programming because that is in some ways trickier. You’ve probably had the experience of programing for mission and it cancels. So how do we do this and keep our eyes on the bottom line too without selling ourselves out?
We share a questions for you to contemplate in advance:
- Who is your audience and what are their core needs?
- What are the most important programming themes we need to offer the world today?
- If there’s one challenge you could solve around programming in your center what would it be?
If you haven’t signed up for HCN membership as yet you can do so here. You can then join this call live and access the full webinar series.
Just one person needs to sign up for paid membership on behalf of your center. As we’re a peer based network, your center colleagues can then sign up for free membership and access the webinars etc. too.
We look forward to sharing the learning journey with you!
