Creative Ways to Fundraise

February 2, 2013 by Centers' Gathering Leave a Comment

Each year there are a variety of topics on the agenda and fundraising is a subject of interest to many.

In 2006, Michael Sullivan coined the term ‘crowd funding’ to describe the process of raising funds online for video projects. Within three years the method had become popularized by musicians, filmmakers and inventors using a variety of crowdfunding sites for artists.

GoFundMeI learnt about crowdfunding – the new way to raise funds which is rapidly increasing in popularity – at the last Gathering and discovered it had been endorsed by President Barack Obama when he signed the JOBS (Jumpstart Our Business Startups) Act in 2012. The same year TIME magazine published an article describing and rating the best crowdfunding platforms in the world.

GoFundMe has emerged as one of the most popular crowdfunding sites on the Internet and I’ve just tried it for the first time!

I’m hoping to fund my travel expenses to attend the 2013 Holistic Centers Gathering at Esalen Institute in Big Sur, California and am intrigued to see what happens…

There are various options for you to consider for your own fundraising ideas:

GoFundMe

Launched in 2010, GoFundMe is a do-it-yourself online fundraising service that has helped thousands of people raise millions of dollars in online donations for the fundraising ideas that matter to them most. GoFundMe allows regular people to accomplish extraordinary things with easy-to-use personal donation websites. GoFundMe fundraising software remains one of the best ways to raise money online.

Kickstarter

Kickstarter is a funding platform for creative projects. Everything from films, music, art, design, and technology. Kickstarter is full of ambitious, innovative, and imaginative projects that are brought to life through the direct support of others.

Every project creator sets their project’s funding goal and deadline. If people like the project, they can pledge money to make it happen. If the project succeeds in reaching its funding goal, all backers’ credit cards are charged when time expires. If the project falls short, no one is charged. Funding on Kickstarter is all-or-nothing.

Globalgiving

GlobalGiving is a charity fundraising web site that gives social entrepreneurs and non-profits from anywhere in the world a chance to raise the money that they need to improve their communities.social entrepreneurs and non-profits. It’s full of solutions run by innovative, grassroots projects and organizations; educating children, feeding the hungry, building houses and teaching adults job skills.

This gathering has been INCREDIBLE. As a small center based way out in Yosemite National Park, I really feel folded into the greater network. This feels so vital. Thank you for creating this!
