When I found my way to Breitenbush, in the spring of 1978, just a few souls lived here. There were no divisions of labor between us then, so everybody worked to do everything that needed to be done—new foundations and roofs for cabins, miles of trenches for new pipes (drinking water, geothermal heating pipes from the hot water wells we drilled, septic pipes, electric conduit pipes), cooking to keep the workers going, and lots more. Our fledgling community, which grew to about a dozen in the first three or four years, consisted mostly of twenty-somethings, with a couple of teenagers and one or two over-thirty people. Nature density as a remedy for nature deprivation was not among the original concepts we started with when we began the arduous work of repairing and preparing to re-open the defunct Breitenbush resort. In the 1970s we were enamored with more holistic lifestyle notions, including self-reliance, appropriate off-the-grid technologies, organic foods, consensus decision-making, egalitarian gender and labor relationships, and a kind of “be here now” nature-based spirituality, not to mention love of the hot springs.

Staffing and Students: An Esalen Case Study

Tatyana Sanikovich, Director of Human Resources at the Esalen Institute, hosted our October Webinar – Staffing and Students: An Esalen Case Study. Birthplace of the human potential movement, Esalen was founded in 1962 by Michael Murphy and Dick Price. Michael is still an active founder and closely involved in the Center for Theory and Research.

“We offer 500 to 600 workshops a year,” Tatyana explained. “There are 149 beds available in circulation and we try to stay around 120 in terms of occupancy, that’s our new model.” In February 2017, a huge landslide buried a large section of California’s scenic highway in Big Sur, closing Esalen to guests both north and south for over six months, the longest closure in their 50+ year history.

Last autumn I was contemplating my travel plans and juggling a proposed visit to the Community of Living Ethics in Italy and International Peace Initiatives in Kenya. Then an invitation to give a presentation in China arrived and I listened to where I felt most called. It would be my third visit to China over consecutive years and from the very first I was curious about the emerging eco-holistic impulse that was positively tangible. In recognition of the support we’d received since hosting our first Gathering in Beijing in 2015 and the possibility of new doors opening, there was an inner nudge to prioritise the visit to this vast continent. The Value of Printed Brochures

I sat in a meeting with the Communications team recently to share feedback about the first draft of the new annual brochure/magazine. Is Bragazine in the English lexicon yet? I’m not convinced the word has a positive vibe! I’m inspired by the fresh design though, capturing the spirit of the Findhorn Foundation and Community.

I included the voice of HCN. Discussion around the value of printed brochures comes up each year during our annual Centers Gathering and the general consensus is yes – in this digital era the printed format still has value. I’m sure I’m not alone in needing off screen time and there’s something reassuring about the feel and texture of paper. Especially when it’s 100% recycled. [Read more…]

I first arrived at Breitenbush Hot Springs in the spring of 1978, more than 40 years ago. I was 28 years old and had just gotten back to the USA after 4 years travelling in Europe and Asia. Upon returning from India and Nepal, I hiked a long section of the Pacific Crest Trail, a trail that extends more than 3000 kilometers, from the southern border of the US and Mexico all the way to the northern border with Canada. I am based at this remarkable holistic organization, ecovillage-in-the-making, new property development and sustainable living center that serves as the host for these programs. My home here is located about two hours’ drive away from the bustling metropolis of Beijing. It is a vivid contrast to that thriving city: a quieter, beautiful and serene setting against a backdrop of mountains.
