Effective small business owners know how to manage a company, but they are also natural leaders who work on themselves as much as they do on their businesses. Being a leader involves doing everything we can to make ourselves a good example for employees in all areas. As leaders of holistic centers we might not always recognise ourselves as small business owners and feel the need to develop our business acumen instead. It’s important that we recognise the wealth of experience we have in the holistic field, while continuing to develop personally and professionally. [Read more…]
As a co-worker in the Findhorn Foundation for eight years, I became increasingly aware of the financial challenges within the non-profit world and spiritual culture of the community. In the role of leading the core educational offerings, the primary income stream for the organisation and the primary gateway for guests, I was determined to make this area as successful as possible. Non-profits can be a haven for the martyr archetypes!
The warrior is often active too. Reversing a ten-year trend of declining income over consecutive years, within my area of influence, I became a keen student of the many elements involved. Attending the Centers Gathering each year it was clear the financial dimension was the weak point in the holistic system for many other centers as well. [Read more…]
Esalen was started in the 1960’s when the two founders, Michael Murphy and Dick Price, realized that the exploration of human potential was being constrained in the academic world and there needed to be a place where people could explore the edge of what was possible for humankind. Today Esalen has a long legacy of exploration, creation and research on the edge of what is possible. Names like Abraham Maslow, Alan Watts, Joseph Campbell, Ida Rolf and Fritz Perls have birthed ideas and movements at Esalen. [Read more…]

Managing Possibility: Creating a Successful Resident Service Program
By Carmen Mills at Hollyhock
When I stepped into the role of Manager of the Resident Service Program (volunteers) at Hollyhock last season, I soon realized that my job title could be “Manager of Possibility.”
Each individual arrives with some kind of expectation about what their Hollyhock volunteer experience will look like. Those who have visited Hollyhock as guests may hold a fantasy of an inexpensive month-long vacation spent lounging on the beach. Others imagine themselves stepping into the role of presenter, meeting their guru, or being struck by a spiritual lightning bolt to emerge glowing with heavenly light. It isn’t that intimate connections and epiphanies won’t happen—they can, and they very often do—but it is dangerous to be overly attached to such outcomes. It is my job to do what I can to help manage residents’ expectations, so that they can be free to step into boundless possibility. [Read more…]

Our monthly webinar series is the second Wednesday of the month and we invite you to join Joanne Station, Events Manager of Saratoga Springs, as we explore:
Conscious Business and Holistic Centers
Wednesday 13 February, 10am PST
The desire to raise human consciousness is both utterly ancient and continually new…and appears to be sadly elusive on a global scale. Yet our world – and our very survival as a species – seems to beg for a massive shift in all realms of human operation. How can we, as a holistic community and holders of sacred space, increase the degree and rate of consciousness today? When it comes to the business closest to us – are we holding ourselves accountable to a higher level of consciousness even when we feel bound by the conventions of business in our daily dealings?
Terence Gilbey, General Manager and CEO of Esalen Institute, hosted our January webinar and walked us around the big technology lift they went through in the last quarter of 2018.
How did they approach the challenge of shifting almost their entire technology suite stack away from a single custom written platform? Terry shared some of the high level approaches used and then as a group we explored detailed technologies during the Q&A.
